Advancing with Watercolor: "Winter Storm"
“Through the media of watercolor and my process of painting I find power through brushwork, and subtlety through transparency.”
“Watercolor differs from other media in that there is a performance aspect to it. The fine pieces come out in one sitting and very often like a classic performance, something happens, a fusion of mind and subject, an improvisation that cannot be duplicated” –
This is part 3 of the Series “Winter Light”
In this lesson we start by recalling our sensation of a winter storm - the sound and push of the wind, the sting of snow on the face. We then move to the watercolor table and practice some technique in the form of a drill which focuses on wet into wet technique. We manipulate the surface of the wet paint with salt, water and saliva - ha ha it sounds discussing but is very effective. We take the experience gained in the drill move onto the larger work - Like music so much depends on our timing.
The motif is the Fairbanks homestead in Dedham MA - the oldest wooden structure in The United Staes dating to 1636. The homestead has a unique character earned by standing through the rough New England winter for more than 350 years
A full length demonstration of the painting "Winter Storm"- also a video of the drill in wet into wet technique with watercolor . Three PDF files which document the drills and demonstration in detail. A image and materials list are also part of the package
